Today, I wanted to share a quick wellness tip for those gorgeous eyes of yours.  My husband JUST shared this tip with me, and I’m kinda like,  I could’ve used this tip months ago, babe.

Anyway, I started reading a bit about blue light and what it does to your eyes.  You know, the same blue light that comes off of your electronics, like your phone, TV, computer screens, and tablets.  This is the same blue light from the sun.

So imagine, you’re getting this sunlight effect during the day, which is cool, but you’re also getting it at 10pm or so, when you’re trying to wind down for the night and relax.  The blue light affects your melatonin production and makes it harder to fall asleep.

So if you’re catching up on your social media when you’re about to get your sleep on, the blue light from your phone or computer will trick your brain and keep you up longer.

Well, sorry, but I’m still gonna be on my laptop at night.

Which leads me to this little program (f.lux) I downloaded that warms up the color of the computer screen and makes it easier on your eyes, especially at night when the blue light is harsher.

The application says:

“it makes the color of your computer’s display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.” {source}

It’s amazing, because I can feel my eyes relaxing when I’m on my laptop now, instead of the squinty look I had going on before (not hot).

Definitely check this out and let me know if you enjoy the soothing view of your screens now.  I will sometimes disable it, just to see how bright and gross the blue light was before, and you guys, it was intense.  You will not believe how your screens used to look and how you could even stand it (a little dramatic?).  But seriously, it makes a huge and positive difference.

Lemon Water

For the past few months, I kept coming across articles about all of the benefits of drinking warm water with lemon first thing in the morning.  I am huge on drinking tons of water throughout the day.  I always have a very large and in charge cup by my side at all times.  I also regularly incorporate lemons into my diet.   So drinking this in the morning was a natural step. Not only do I love the taste of lemons, but the health benefits are worth it alone.

I start all of my mornings by chugging 2 glasses of water right when I wake up.

I’ve been doing this for years and if I ever skip this, I definitely feel it later on in the day.

After seeing these articles talking about how good warm water with lemon is for you first thing in the AM, I decided to look into it.   If I can improve my morning ritual with something so easy that also packs a healthy punch, why the hell not?  I read claims for top 5 benefits…top 10 benefits…top 20 benefits!  So I looked into it a bit and found that some of these benefits aren’t proven (mainly overhyped) but there are definitely a few benefits that make this little daily ritual totally worth it.

Here are a few of the benefits of drinking warm water with lemon in the morning:

◊  Helps with Digestion

This might have to do with drinking water in general and less about the lemon, but it can help flush the system and get everything running smoothly again.

Making sure to drink water when you wake up is super important because your body has gone without water for 8 hours and this helps to rehydrate and energize.

The fact that the water is already warm helps the body absorb it faster because it doesn’t need to use more energy to process the cold water.

◊  Immune System Boost

Lemons contain Folate, Potassium and Vitamin C, which are all amazing for you.  But “Vitamin C is vital to the function of a strong immune system” (via)

◊  Healthy Weight

This is more about drinking water and starting the day off right.  This won’t be a miracle cure for weight loss but there are reports “that water consumption increases the rate at which people burn calories.” (via)

◊  Better Skin

Lemon water can benefit the skin because of the fact that it improves digestion and flushes the body.  This is also a benefit from drinking plain water.  Also, Vitamin C is needed for collagen production, which lemons have plenty of.

So these are few of the pros of drinking warm lemon water right when you wake up.  I have been trying to drink this as often as I can, and I have been feeling more energized (even before I have my morning coffee!) and it kinda sets the tone for my day.

I like to squeeze ¼ to ½ lemon into a glass of warm water.  If the seeds bother you (because they will get in there) you can use a strainer.  I also like to drink mine through a straw because I tend to have really sensitive teeth/gums.  Also, with lemon water, you should brush your teeth before drinking it, or you should wait at least 30 minutes after drinking it to brush, so you don’t mess up your enamel.

The taste can be a little strong at first, so you might want to start with a ¼ of a lemon.

So really, my main suggestion would be to start upping your water intake in general.  Especially drinking water in the morning.  And if you want an extra boost, add in some lemon and get all of those amazing health benefits that this citrus has to offer.  If you want any more information on all of the benefits of lemons, check out this site.

Fun Extra Tip:

I like to zest the lemons I use and add it to a container in my freezer and then use that for pasta dishes or sauces.  Love getting more than one use out of something (!!!)
